Student’s father – a 9/11 first responder – inspires her to pursue medical career
Nina Gurrieri, a Trico Foundation scholarship recipient, was only 11 months old when the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks happened, but the events of that day had a profound impact on her life.
Her father, Joseph, was a first responder at Ground Zero in New York City on 9/11. Joseph was diagnosed with many health conditions due to his service on 9/11 including lung disease and 90 percent blockage in his heart and arteries. He needed a stent to open his veins for better blood flow to his heart. Nina’s mother, Mary, is a stay-at-home caregiver for Joseph.
As a result of her father’s experience, Nina has always been interested in respiratory therapy and wants to pursue an associate degree in Respiratory Care at Pima Community College. Her dream will have to wait a little longer. The COVID-19 pandemic has increased interest in respiratory therapy and there is a long waiting list to get into the Respiratory Care program at Pima. She has been accepted into the program for Fall of 2022. In the meantime, she is taking classes online at Northern Arizona University toward a bachelor’s degree in respiratory care.
“I have always wanted to attend college, but I didn’t think it was possible until now,” Nina said. “I would like to thank (Trico) very much for this scholarship. I appreciate it so much.”
Nina graduated from Ironwood Ridge High School in 2019 with a 4.0 GPA. She likes to collect rare books and loves to read. She volunteered at her church and served food at a local soup kitchen. Nina said volunteering at the soup kitchen was a rewarding experience for her because she likes to help people. Nina is looking forward to a career in the medical field.
