Stay safe: Steer clear of padmounted transformers

Can you see the transformer in this picture? Neither will Trico line crews when they need to make repairs. Trico personnel need 10 feet of clearance to service padmounted transformers.

Have you noticed green or tan metal boxes in your neighborhood?

These “boxes” contain padmounted transformers, and their job is to step down high voltage electricity to a lower voltage needed to power lights and appliances in homes.

While it may be tempting to change the way it looks, do not decorate, paint, or landscape near the box. And teach your kids that that metal, box-shaped transformer near your yard is not a safe place to play!  Kids should not sit on, try to open, or play around these green boxes.

Before doing any outdoor project that involves digging, it’s important to call 8-1-1 at least three business days before you start. Or you can submit a request online by visiting

Disrupting an underground utility line can interrupt service, cause injuries and cost money to repair, so remember to call 811 first and know what’s below.
