High school juniors can win free trip to Washington, D.C.
Imagine 1,600 energetic high school students descending on the nation’s capital for a week of sightseeing, immersion in history and making lifelong friendships—all while having fun and learning about the cooperative business model.
This is the objective of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association’s Washington Youth Tour. Annually, Trico sends four students on this amazing experience, free of charge, and all they have to do is apply. The Washington Youth Tour is a national event that brings together more than 1,600 students from electric cooperatives across the nation who gather in Washington, D.C., each summer to explore the capital. They learn first-hand what it is like to be involved in the political process, develop leadership skills and learn about the cost of freedom as they visit memorials and Arlington National Cemetery.
“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience" said Kalee Hansen, who went on the 2018 Washington Youth Tour. "I loved meeting incredible people, experiencing American history first hand, and learning more about what my electric Co-op does for my community.”
Students also have the opportunity to explore monuments and attractions such as the Smithsonian museums, Holocaust Memorial Museum, U.S. Marine Corps Memorial Museum, White House, U.S. Capitol Building tour, the Lincoln Memorial, National Cathedral, a Potomac paddle boat ride, and a dinner and dance with students from other states. Students also get the chance to sit down with staffers and actual Congressmen and women, and discuss relevant topics that affect them and their local communities.
Trico is accepting applications for the 2019 Washington Youth Tour. High school juniors who are the dependent child of a Trico Member are eligible to apply. The name on the application must be the name of the student applying.
