Washington Youth Tour

Trip to D.C. inspires students to improve their community

High school juniors can win free trip to Washington, D.C.

Imagine 1,600 energetic high school students descending on the nation’s capital for a week of sightseeing, immersion in history and making lifelong friendships—all while having fun and learning about the cooperative business model.

This is the objective of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association’s Washington Youth Tour. Four students from Trico-area high schools joined students from 46 states and traveled to Washington, D.C., June 9–15 for this year’s annual Youth Tour. In addition to the usual monuments and memorials, groups met with members of Congress.

J. Martin Peralta, a student at San Miguel High School who aspires to earn a career in public service, said that his favorite part of the trip was the congressional visit where he got to ask Congressman Tom O’Halleran many questions about his viewpoints and his experience in political life.

“Meeting with Mr. (Raul) Grijalva influenced me to better my community and continue to work hard for what I want,” said Shelby Sanders, now a senior at Flowing Wells High School. “I will use my experience of Washington, D.C., as a reminder to do everything I can to improve my surroundings and continue the legacy of previous generations. I am extremely grateful to have been chosen for the youth tour.”

“My favorite memories were made hanging out with a new group of people who I can now call my friends,” Nathan Christiansen said.

The Trico students, when asked to recount their trip, cited it as, “better than I would have ever imagined,” and the, “trip of a lifetime,” and encouraged fellow students to apply. Arianna Baca, one of the students who spent the week in D.C., did not even believe she would be selected. “You need to apply,” Arianna said. “You won’t regret it.”

If you know a junior in high school, encourage them to apply for this unique, all-expense paid trip to truly appreciate the history of the United States. They must be the dependent child of a Trico Member to be eligible. Click here to apply. The deadline to apply is November 3, 2017.
